MIS Historic Learning Center

San Francisco is home to many interesting small museums that are frequently overlooked by visitors as well as locals.  One of these is the MIS Historic Learning Center at Crissy Field in the Presidio.  The museum is located in Building 640 where in 1941 Japanese-Americans were trained to be military linguists to serve in the armed services in the coming war.

A few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japanese living on the West Coast of the United States, a majority of whom were U.S. citizens, were sent to internment camps in the interior of the country.  Yet the Japanese-American soldiers in the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) continued to train and then serve the country that kept their friends and families imprisoned.

You can learn more about this unusual piece of World War II history by watching the introductory video and exploring the artifacts and photos displayed in the museum.  The MIS Historic Learning Center is open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5:00 p.m.  General Admission is $10 per person.  Veterans and children under the age of 12 can enter the museum for free.
